Learn the Cutting-Edge Negotiation Tactics You Need to Succeed at Negotiation and Leadership
Dear Business Colleague,
Jessica’s story says a lot about how to become a more effective negotiator. Here’s how she tells it.
Life is a negotiation. As an advertising sales director, I’m constantly negotiating with clients, vendors, and sometimes, even my own staff! From agency fees to vacation days – it seems like everything is up for negotiation.
When I’m not working, I still seem to find myself in negotiation mode. I search around to get the very best deal – whether it’s on a new hardwood floor or apples at the farmer’s market.
More often than not, I tend to get what I want. But I know I could do better… and I’m sure that I’m leaving value on the table. Because there’s not really an opportunity to improve my negotiation skills at work, last year I started looking for other ways to take my skills to the next level.
Knowing that I wanted to advance my skills (and my career) my colleague told me about an intensive negotiation program offered by the Program on Negotiation at Harvard Law School, called Negotiation and Leadership.
After reading through the Negotiation and Leadership brochure, my mind was made up: This was the program for me. After all, it offered me the opportunity to acquire all the negotiation techniques, tools, and frameworks I needed to gain a critical competitive edge. Three months later, I found myself in Cambridge at the Negotiation and Leadership program.
I can honestly say I’ve never been surrounded by a more motivated, more intelligent group of business professionals. Not only had some participants flown in from all over the country, many had come from far corners of the globe to take part in the unique program.
Surrounded by this impressive group of peers, I was challenged to think critically about how I handle negotiation…and I can’t say enough about the faculty. Considered some of the world’s greatest negotiation experts, they’ve negotiated peace treaties, brokered multi-billion dollar deals, and handled complex, multi-faceted negotiations – all without breaking a sweat.
During the small group sessions and interactive exercises, I put their lessons into practice.
Specifically, I learned how to:
– Regain control of a negotiation
– Neutralize threats, lies, and insults
– Shape important deals
– Negotiate in uncertain environments
– Improve working relationships
– Claim (and create more value)
– Resolve seemingly intractable disputes
I had also signed up for an intensive, one-day session that followed the three-day course. That extra day was truly the cherry on top of an unforgettable experience. Drawing on the latest research, the professor gave us critical insights into conflict resolution – knowledge I would have never gained if I hadn’t attended the session.
I returned to my advertising role with a newfound zeal for negotiation…and it showed. I was able to create more value, ease tensions around the office, and shine in client and vendor negotiations. I even negotiated a fee increase with a notoriously tight-fisted client!
While I was tempted to keep the key to my success a secret, I told anyone who asked (and even some who hadn’t) that I’d attended Negotiation and Leadership. I even forwarded them the Spring 2025 Negotiation and Leadership Program Guide.
Having seen the results I’ve received firsthand, three of my colleagues are attending Negotiation and Leadership this spring. I’m thrilled for them, and I only wish I could go again!
